USCG (US Coast Guard) Approved Explained:
When a fire extinguisher is USCG approved, it means that it has been tested and certified to meet the safety standards set by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) for use on boats and other marine vessels. The USCG has established these standards to ensure that fire extinguishers used in the marine environment are effective, reliable, and safe.
To receive USCG approval, fire extinguishers must pass a series of tests that evaluate their performance in suppressing fires involving flammable liquids, electrical equipment, and other materials commonly found on boats. These tests also evaluate factors such as durability, corrosion resistance, and ease of use.
Fire extinguishers that are USCG approved will have a label or marking indicating their approval, which typically includes a USCG approval number. The label may also indicate the type and size of fire extinguisher, as well as other important information such as its weight and operating instructions.
Having a USCG approved fire extinguisher on board a vessel is not only required by law, but it can also be critical for the safety of those on board. In the event of a fire on a boat or other marine vessel, a USCG approved fire extinguisher can help to quickly and effectively extinguish the flames, potentially preventing a catastrophic loss of life and property.

Here is a simplified explanation of the new extinguisher requirements, which depend on the model year of the boat:
- Model year 2018 or newer: Vessels may carry extinguishers labeled as 5-B, 10-B or 20-B. Extinguishers labeled with B-I or B-II only are no longer acceptable. The manufacturing date must not be more than 12 years old.
- Model year 2017 or older: Vessels may carry extinguishers labeled either 5-B, 20-B rated extinguishers with date stamp or B-I, B-II rated fire extinguishers.
Inspection of Fire Extinguishers:
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that fire extinguishers be inspected at least once a year. There are three elements to a fire extinguisher inspection.
- Visual Inspection: The visual inspection includes checking the tamper seal and safety pin, the gauges to ensure that the needle is positioned within the green or ‘OK’ zone of the pressure gauge, labeled expiration dates, and the metal cylinder tank to ensure there is no rust or damage that could affect the fire extinguisher in any way.
- Physical Inspection: The physical inspection is done by the inspector handling the fire extinguisher, reviewing the weight of the extinguisher, evaluating the quality or condition of the hose and the seals to ensure there are no cracks or other damage.
- Verification Inspection: The verification of the fire extinguisher is done by tagging or recording on the extinguisher inspection log, its location and the date of the inspection. This is to ensure that it hasn’t been moved and that it has had its yearly inspection per the NFPA and OSHA guidelines.
