Roughly 37 million vehicles from almost every auto maker are being recalled to replace faulty Takata airbag inflators. This is the largest recall in automotive history, involving 19 automakers including Ford Motor Company. Takata has determined that propellent degradation can occur overtime and rupture the airbag inflator. The geographical location of the vehicle makes a difference as temperature and humidity accelerate the rate of degradation. If deployed, a ruptured inflator can explode and shoot shrapnel outwards towards the vehicle occupants and result in injury and even death.

Ford’s Commitment to the Recall Process

Ford Motor Company has long been known for its commitment to building high quality, dependable products and satisfied customers. Their participation in this Safety Recall demonstrates their commitment to vehicle safety and customer satisfaction. As part of their overall master plan they have set a goal to “achieve 100 percent accounting for Ford vehicles in the highest priority groups under the airbag recalls by June 30, 2020.”

To help achieve this goal, Ford is being creative using a wide variety of ways to reach and inform their customers of the airbag recalls, including:

• Multiple and graphically driven direct-mail campaigns, including first-class mail, multicolored postcards, FedEx envelopes and notifications, registered mail, oversized envelopes and sticky reminder cards
• Digital advertising avenues
• Personal phone calls and robocalls
• Text messages
• Email and awareness campaigns via both traditional and social media
• Local dealer outreach efforts
• Searching used-car advertisements to identify unrepaired vehicles

In addition, Ford is working with state agencies, insurance companies and other partners to find and repair vehicles. Further, other activities are being implemented to help make the replacement process as easy and convenient as possible for the customer, including a “Do Not Drive” campaign where dealers will tow vehicles to the dealership, make the repair/replacement, and return the vehicle to the customer free of charge.
